Calcium in the plant
Calcium is essential for the building of cell walls. An insufficient calcium supply disrupts this function, particularly affecting young and actively growing tissues such as fruit, leaves, and root tips, resulting in significant yield losses and quality deterioration. Moreover, calcium-deficient cells tend to be structurally weaker and more prone to biotic stress, including pathogen attacks.
Beyond its structural role, calcium is involved in various physiological processes. It participates in enzymatic activities and plays a key role in the coordination of intercellular signalling.
Calcium mobility within the plant is inherently limited. As it is transported exclusively through the xylem, its movement relies heavily on transpiration-driven water flow. This presents a challenge under environmental conditions—such as high humidity or extreme heat—that reduce transpiration and, consequently, the transport of calcium from roots to the upper plant tissues.
Additionally, calcium cannot be redirected through the phloem to developing sink organs like young fruits, which require high nutrient input during rapid growth phases. This characteristic makes calcium deficiencies particularly difficult to correct once symptoms appear.
Given its critical physiological functions and restricted mobility, calcium fertilization must be carefully managed throughout the growing season to ensure continuous availability.
